Role of Women in Mali
The Woman Workers of Mali
In Mali rice was traditionally grown only by women near the rivers or wetlands. In much of
Africa, women hold the responsibility for producing subsistence food crops for household consumption on their
own plot or on the communal household fields.
The women in Mali are the household managers, farm workers in the fields, potters and the market women in the
markets or in the village streets. Yet despite their many skills, the role of Women in Mali, find it hard to turn a profit because most work
alone at home and have not had the opportunity to learn about marketing.
UN Help
That is why volunteers from the UN, the majority of
them national field workers come in. They are bringing technical and managerial skills to rural women, but also
encourage them to form groups of potters, bakers and gardeners to market their products. Where money is needed,
UNVs help present the Malian women's ideas to a funding committee so that grassroots initiatives can grow. UNVs
continued to strengthen the role of women in institutions and communities.
