Princess Esther Kamatari
Born in 1951 HRH Princess Esther Kamatari is a writer, model and exiled Burundian princess.
Black models Africa modeling first featured model Esther Kamatari was apart of the Burundi royal family and grew up in Burundi until 1962, the king was
overthrown in a military coup d'etat and the monarchy abolished in 1966. Kamatari fled the country in 1964 after
her father's assassination and settled in Paris, where she became a model. An attempt to re-establish the kingdom
ended with the murder of King Ntare V in 1972.
A peace brokered by South Africa has made elections possible in Burundi and Esther Kamatari and her Abahuza party,
which means "bringing people together" will run on the platform of restoration of the monarchy.
Iman Abdulmajid
Black models Africa modeling second featured model Iman Abdulmajid was born in Mogadishu, Somalia on July 25, 1955. Iman Abdulmajid is a supermodel and is now based in the
United States.
Born the daughter of the Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Iman attended high school in Egypt and later Nairobi
University in Kenya, where her parents still reside. She studied political science and was recruited as a model
by American photographer Peter Beard. Relocating to the United States, she married basketball player Spencer
Haywood in 1977. Their daughter, Zulekha Haywood, was born in 1978. Iman and Haywood are now divorced. She is presently
married to British rock star and actor, David Bowie. They have one daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones, born August 15,
2000.
Iman played a shapeshifter named Martia in the 1991 hit film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. She also appeared
as a character in the computer game Omikron - The Nomad Soul. She has become a citizen of the United States and
currently heads a cosmetics company.
